Natural
alternatives to major surgery for women
From the Desk of Dr. Alvin Pettle
MD, OBS/GYN
For the past 20 years, I've worked as an obstetrician gynecologist
at the Etobicoke General Hospital in Toronto. From 1990 to
1994 I was the Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1994
I went on a search for self-discovery and took six months
off to find my own soul again. During that time I studied
natural and preventative medicine. I came to realize that
both Eastern and Western medicine must live in harmony and
with each other to help prevent disease and not just treat
disease once it develops. When I returned to practice gynecology,
I opened The Ruth Pettle Wellness Center where health care
practitioners are dedicated to practicing preventative medicine.
I now tend to be more aggressive in the prevention of surgery
and look first for non-invasive ways to deal with the medical
condition as well as natural alternatives.
Today, millions of women are concerned about aging and must
decide whether or not to undergo synthetic hormone replacement
therapy. Women are no longer willing to accept the risks associated
with synthetic hormones and are searching for safer alternatives
such as natural hormone replacement. Natural HRT means that
the chemical make-up of the replacement hormone is the same
as what the human body produces. They are bio-identical plant-derived
estrogen and progesterone products that are entirely without
side effects. Various dosage forms can be compounded to meet
the specific needs of each woman.
Many people benefit immensely from natural alternatives in
all areas of women's health. Apart from natural hormone therapy,
traditional acupuncture is often successfully used as an alternative
to medications or even surgery.
At the Ruth Pettle Wellness Center, I have the pleasure of
working with Dr. Sandra Testaguzza, doctor of acupuncture
who addresses imbalances due to hormonal changes in women's
bodies and treats symptoms of PMS peri-menopausal and menopausal
imbalances, pain and all stress- related health problems.
Chinese medical thought begins with the theory of Yin and
Yang. Yin represents the levels of Estrogen and Yang represents
the levels of Progesterone. Acupuncture addresses these imbalances
caused by hormonal change. For example, hot flashes are a
consequence of the inability of Yin to restrain Yang (heat).
It is the quality and quantity of energy stored in the adrenals
that play an enormous role in balancing (Estrogen & Progesterone)
levels, synergistically render emotional balance. That's empowerment!
Acupuncture is about balance!
Consumers must become proactive in their own health care.
They should do research to help them understand and deal with
their medical issues. They need to be comfortable with the
decisions made on their behalf and they must be part of that
decision-making process.
Honor yourself and your intuition. Surgery may be necessary,
but in many cases, you should be the judge of when and with
whom.
