With Winter Fast Approaching now is the time to get your birdfeeders in full operation.  If you watch your feeders closely, you may notice that some birds pick certain seeds out of the feeder and throw other seeds on the ground below. You may also see different types of birds in your yard than in your neighbour's yard.  Are the birds being picky?  Are you feeding them the right seed?

The kind of seed you choose depends on the type of birds you want to attract.  Seed mixtures with a high content of black oil sunflower are your best choice to use at feeders.  Black oil sunflower alone is an alternative as this seed is the favourite seed of the Cardinal, Chickadee, Nuthatch, House Finch and Evening Grosbeak.  Blue Jays seem to prefer the striped sunflower or peanuts in the shell, although they will eat black oil sunflower.  The Mourning Dove, House Sparrow and Junco prefer white millet over sunflower.  Therefore, a seed blend is your best choice, but, make sure that the mixture contains large quantities of black oil sunflower (at least 60%).

There are many wild bird seed mixes available on the market, but be very careful, as many of these mixes contain as much as 75% grain fillers (e.g. milo, wheat, flax, oats and grain by-products) that reduce the price and make it appear that you are getting a bargain.  Birds do not eat the grain fillers and simply kick them to the ground.  Even cracked corn is not recommended for seed blends as it tends to attract the less desirable birds such as Pigeons and Starlings.

Our Wild Birds Unlimited seed blends have been formulated for this area to attract the greatest variety of birds to any one feeding station.  Our seed blends are formulated for no waste... the birds eat every seed.  Feed your birds high quality seed and word will spread quickly.

Another seed that is commonly used at feeders is niger seed.  This is the seed that is preferred by the Goldfinch in Spring, Summer and Fall.

At Wild Birds Unlimited, each type of seed is carefully selected and blended for the tastes of our local birds.  No cereal fillers.  Just fresh seeds delivered weekly and inspected by us to meet our high quality standards.  Satisfaction guaranteed.
